Ashley Sofia's 2019

Ashley Sofia's 2019

What’s been the most exciting thing you’ve done in 2019?

Well, I put out a record and got engaged. Both those things are pretty big.

What’s been your biggest challenge of 2019?

Dealing with painful and unpredictable autoimmune flares and the challenges that come with that.

Where’s the coolest place you’ve played music in 2019?

A woman told me she’s been playing my album in Texas for children with trauma. She said the kids request the music every day. I love that the album has got its own legs. I don’t need to even be in Texas for it to make me so proud to know it’s out there working its magic.

What’s the one album you’ve loved most in 2019?

Is it rotten to pick something old? There’s so much great music out that came out this year but I’ve been listening to Neil Young’s Harvest Moon a lot. It feels like home.

What’s been the song that’s most soundtracked your 2019?

'Still Crazy After All These Years' for sure.

What have you hated about 2019?

Watching politicians making decisions that decimate the planet.

What are you most excited about for in 2020?

I’m really excited to share some creative projects I have up my sleeve.

Finally, what’s the one thing about your 2019 that you’d like to share?

2019 was such a difficult and beautiful year all at once for me with the Himalayan highs and Marianas trench lows. I guess I’d like people to know how important it was for me to make a record that included those parts of me. I wanted to cover the challenges and triumphs. To cover politics and the difficulty of pursuing the arts. Love and heartbreak. Kindness and the human condition. I made a very Buddhist record with sitar and lead guitar solos and fade-outs and I did it my way. I didn’t want anyone in my ear telling me to dumb it down or play it safe like I have in the past. It isn’t that I’ve ever been a rule follower, but everything about Shades of Blue was on purpose and it was me. I made the record I had to make before I died. I had to get those songs off my chest. I can breathe a lot easier knowing I did.
