"2017 has been on of my favorite years! I feel like I know who I am as an artist and person more than ever before" Introducing Molly Tuttle
Hey Molly, what have you been up to today?
Right now I am at a music camp at Grand Targhee in Alta, Wyoming teaching guitar and performing this weekend at the Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival here. I spent most of the day today teaching group guitar classes and workshops.
Can you introduce yourself to any readers that aren’t familiar with you?
My name is Molly Tuttle. I’m a Nashville based guitar-player, singer, and songwriter.
Your debut mini album, Rise, came out recently, how would you describe it in two lines?
Rise is a collection of original songs and one instrumental track. The album is influenced by my bluegrass roots but also features pop, americana and singer-songwriter elements.
What was your process for writing and selecting songs for the set?
These songs came together over years of writing. The collection on Rise spans my time growing up in California, studying music in Boston at Berklee College of Music and finally moving to Nashville to continue my career as a performer. I had a lot of songs built up over the years but these seven seemed to fit together and form a cohesive project that I was proud to put out as my first solo recording.
I think my favorite track is ‘You Didn’t Call My Name’ can you tell us what that song’s about?
That song I wrote right before leaving California and it was about someone I knew who I wished I’d had more time with.
And if you were forced to choose a favourite from the album, what would yours be?
I think it would be 'Good Enough' because that one feels personal to me and is a good reminder to myself.
Some of the guitar playing on the record is awesome, how much practice does it take?
It takes a ton of practice to get good at anything. In a lot of ways I still feel like a beginner at guitar, but I did work very hard at it practicing for hours each day for many years.
And what’s your favourite type of guitar?
I mainly play a dreadnought guitar but lately I have been loving my OM size that I have from Huss and Dalton guitars. It is slightly smaller and very comfortable to play.
You’ve been nominated for some International Bluegrass Music awards, what does that kind of recognition mean for you?
It’s one of the biggest honors of my life because so many musicians who I’ve respected since I began playing are nominated as well. Being put alongside musicians who are my total heroes is kind of surreal.
So 2017 for you so far, tell us about it?
2017 has been on of my favorite years! I feel like I came into my own in a lot of different ways -- there were hard changes and growing pains but I feel like I know who I am as an artist and person more than I ever have before.
What’s coming up for the rest of your year?
For the rest of the year I have more touring and festivals, IBMA, Americana Fest in Nashville, writing songs and planning the next record!
You’re a woman in a predominantly male industry, has that had any impact on your career so far?
I’m sure it has in some ways, both positive and negative. There have been times when it has felt hard and uncomfortable to be the only woman in the room. I just try to put my best foot forward and trust that people will judge me by the music I create, not my gender.
Are there any instances when you’ve thought “A guy wouldn’t get treated like that!”?
Of course! I’ve been subject to my fair share of sexist remarks from fans, journalists, music teachers, you name it. It helps to speak up and also to have fellow women musicians to talk to about it.
If you could only listen to one song this week, what would it be?
'Mythological Beauty' by Big Thief.
What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
What’s my favorite food. Answer: veggie burrito
What are you doing next today?
Getting ready for bed!
Finally, how do you take your coffee? (Or alcohol?)
