RM Hubbert - First & Last
RM Hubbert's First & Last is as stripped down as it gets: it's just the man himself and his acoustic guitar for the entire running time. At the very least, you have to admire the confidence and it's clear that RM Hubbert knows his instrument inside-out and how to coax different styles out of it, specifically flamenco and samba, but unfortunately there just isn't enough meat on the bones to make First & Last an experience you want to repeat. Too often the tracks roll into one another without any major discernible differences in tempo or composition and it ends up sounding like you've just spent 30 minutes in the company of a guy who is just free-rolling and not crafting stand-alone songs. Hopefully the album title doesn't become a prophetic one though as it's clear that RM Hubbert has the talent, just maybe not the direction as of yet.
