The High Wire - The Sleep Tape
If drifting off into a hazy world of dreamy, shoegaze synths that ebb and flow amongst some lovely girl/boy vocal harmonies are your thing, then The High Wire could be your new favourite band. A London-based three-piece comprised of Tim Compton, Stuart Peck and Alexia Hagen, their new album The Sleep Tape is one that does not disappoint.
Second single and opening track ‘The Midnight Bell’ introduces the lovely vocal harmonies of Tim and Alexia. Easily one of the bands strongest assets, they weave and float in amongst the music, brilliantly complementing the variety of sounds. ‘Hang from the Lights’ sees acoustic guitar added to the mix, where it remains for the rest of the album, nestling itself in with the more computer-driven sounds. One of the shorter tracks on the record follows in the form of ‘New Lovers’, almost an interlude or a contemplative time before the album continues its journey into the ether.
Comparisons can be drawn with Maps, none more so than on the title track, which sounds like a more organic and natural version of their take on the concept. ‘Honeycomb’ is the first of three instrumental songs on the album, incorporating post-rock guitars into proceedings and introduced by some plaintive piano. These vocal-less tracks work well in creating a cohesive, flowing feeling to the whole album, and ‘Exit’ in particular really envelops the listener in its fuzzy, string-drenched goodness.
In The Sleep Tape, The High Wire have created an impressive debut, one that stands up well to its contemporaries and bodes very well for their future. No safety net required.
