Hot Chip - Birmingham 02 Academy

Following a suitably bouncy support slot from Casiokids, which is perfectly pitched for a Saturday night party, the crowd are suitably cookin' for a main meal of Hot Chip. Always more electro-geek than electro-chic, the band certainly do nothing to change this opinion when they take to the stage. As soon as ...Boy from School announces itself though, an education in a truly refreshing - and often barmy - approach to danceable pop begins.

While the title track of new album One Life Stand provides fans with the requisite hook-heavy monster (played here with aplomb btw), the album itself sees the already versatile band shapeshift more over ten tracks than we've witnessed before. Although the set tonight is interspersed with oldies, including shoulda-been single Hold On, it's all about the new stuff - and I'm happy to report the album comes alive.

The usual array of synths and guitars are joined by steel drums, a tropical sonic addition that pervades the new album that tonight injects a new layer for lead singer Alexis Taylor's sweetly soulful vocals to swoon over. Cuddly honey monster Joe Goddard adds his own vocal stylings to One Pure Thought and newie Alley Cats, which is so effortlessly winning that it's sure to receive a single release at some point. Elsewhere, Hand Me Down Your Love plays like Motown remixed, We Have Love and I Feel Better are two new ecstatically received rave-ups, and even Brothers, which veers dangerously towards mawkish on the record, transforms with pounding live bass. The lack of Shake a Fist might be a gaping black hole in the setlist, but Over and Over causes the expected shockwaves and set closer Ready for the Floor has everyone doing it, doing it, doing it now.
