Mouse On The Keys - Sezession

The idea of post-rock mixed with contemporary jazz all sounds a bit po-faced and pretentious, and played by anyone else, it probably would be. But Tokyo-born Mouse On The Keys have managed to inject a whole load of fun into every song on this four-track EP. Having been previously released purely in their home country, Denovali have quite rightly given it a European release so we can all get in on the act.

As their name implies, most of the music is played on piano and keyboards with drums keeping everything together. However, on second track ‘Toccatina’, soprano saxophone is brought into the mix creating a real jazzy, upbeat, almost danceable track. ‘Raumkrankheit’ continues with some smooth, low-key synths gliding over frantic drumming and keyboards while ‘A Sad Little Town’ sounds like an octopus is playing the drums and the piano is trying to keep up, sounding anything but ‘sad’. Denovali have done us a great favour in unearthing and revealing this brilliant act. Look forward to the reissue of their 2009 debut full-length later this year.
