Scary Mansion - Make Me Cry
Make Me Cry, the second album from Brooklyn based four piece Scary Mansion, is a compelling blend of feedback fuelled indie-pop and ethereal introspection which is catapulted ahead of the lumpen indie-proles by the captivating, breathless vocal style of frontwoman Leah Hayes. Particular mention must be made of opening track ‘No Law’, which bowls along like The Wedding Present being pursued by an angry synthesiser and is surely a candidate for student disco track of the year so far. Eighties reference points litter the album and thus ‘Yer Grief’ recalls the epic majesty of Sugarcubes while the re-recorded ‘Scum Inside’ draws heavily upon the legacy of the Pixies. Not that such things are a cause for complaint, nor is the porcelain fragility which seeps through the very essence of the wistful ‘Mighty’ and austere ‘On My Mind’. Make Me Cry is unlikely to top any end of year polls but, quietly, Scary Mansion have recorded a unspectacularly fine album here. Seek it out.
