The Dillinger Escape Plan - Barfly, London

It seems ‘Dillinger Day’ has hit the Barfly in London. With plenty of buzz surrounding these two shows ( one evening and one matinee), The Dillinger Escape Plan have a lot to live up to, especially with the impending release of their brand new studio album, Option Paralysis, looming. The Barfly is packed to the rafters for this afternoon show, having sold-out tonight’s show in next to no time at all.

As the crowd begins to stir, DEP take to the stage and swiftly deliver a kick to the groin with 'Good Neighbor'. And they don’t let up either. Tracks such as ‘Sugar Coated Sour’ and ‘Sunshine the Werewolf’ pummel the crowd into submission, as bodies fly all around the tiny confines of the room. Highlights from 2007’s Ire Works, such as ‘Black Bubblegum’ and ‘Milk Lizard’ see the band sticking to vaguely normal time signatures and showcase the versatile vocals of man-mountain Greg Puciato.

There are slight breaks in the full-on force usually exerted by DEP, none more brilliantly so than in a stunning rendition of ‘Mouth of Ghosts’, with Ben Weinman taking to the piano to show off his ivory-tinkling skills. They even break out a newie in the form of ‘Farewell, Mona Lisa’, a visceral tech-metal onslaught that bodes well for the new album. A surprising addition to the set comes in the form of a bizarrely brilliant cover of Tears for Fears ‘Head Over Heels.’

The last one-two attack of ‘The Running Board’ and ‘43% Burnt’ finish things off with an almighty crash as Greg takes to climbing the lighting rig, and guitarist Jeff Tuttle invades the back bar, towering over the crowd from behind like some guitar-wielding maniac. DEP have once again shown today why they are so revered amongst their peers, and why their fans go absolutely ape-shit for them. The Dillinger Escape Plan are back and they’ll demolish everything in their path.
