Outkast - Roses
Despite being widely billed as the saviours of hip-hop, Outkast ought to shake off the description as quickly as they shook off collaborative efforts between Andre 3000 and Big Boi. Hip-hop has rarely been at risk since the first sound systems rolled into parties in New York but further west, the sound of a little fella keen on purple has been open to question since he started writing on his face and signing his cheques with an androgynous squiggle.
As such, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was greeted like Sign O' The Times and its mix of funk, rock, psychedelia, pop and soul was like the falling out with Warner Brothers, The Revolution and the last decade or so was no more than a bad dream.
Roses is Andre 3000's bitter song about no-good girls and gives over a verse to allow Big Boi to guest. The funky guitar and keyboards recall the likes of Stax whilst the gritty sound gets closer to Dirty Mind than that produced from Paisley Park. Still good but there's no reason not to own Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, the superb album from which has been taken.
