Fight Like Apes - Live At Eurosonic
Fight Like Apes’ cartoonish brand of alt-pop seems more suited to the concert stage where the band's eccentric whimsy is given room to flourish. Kind of a mad-professor mash-up between Supergrass and Aqua, their eclectic mix of upbeat songs keeps the gig moving at a swift and happy pace. This live recording, taken from their set at the Eurosonic festival in Holland, shows the band at their best. They give it their all as the audience is steadily won over with each passing song, due in large part to Mary-Kate Geraghty’s powerful vocals and the onstage chemistry betwixt her and her sidekick Jamie Fox. The eleven song CD (available as a free download from the band’s website on December 17th) is the kind of music you’d love at your prom or any other festive gathering. Fun irreverent pop guaranteed to keep the party going.
FLA get the party started with the jarring instrumental ‘You Are The Hat’ which morphs nicely in to peppy ‘Do You Karate?’. In between friendly banter (including asking the audience to waltz during ‘Knucklehead’) the band plough though their set spurred on by the crowd’s warm reaction. Other tracks include songs from their debut album Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion including ‘I’m Beginning To Think You Prefer Beverley Hills 90210 To Me’, ‘Lend Me Your Face’ and ‘Battlestations’ .
Fight Like Apes may not shake the foundations of rock with their music, but it is my guess that they wouldn’t even want to. Pure and simple silly fun, that’s all this is. And that’s not bad.
