The Amorphous Androgynous - A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind Vol 2 – Pagan Love Vibrations
If you’ve not crossed paths before then let me tell you that Amorphous Androgynous consists of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans (AKA Future Sound Of London), two men with a knack for discovering and giving new life to the best of the buried and the forgotten, (no, not Noel Gallagher – cheeky!) and this second volume digs deeper into the nether reaches of charity shop storerooms to take listeners on an exploratory journey through the rich goldmine of weird and wonderful cosmic space music.
The ethos behind this rather chilled out collection is the urge to destroy the ‘beat fascism’, which dictated the super clubs of the nineties and continues to brainwash the dance scene today. This collection is all about the guys finding the right blend of obscure cuts culled from the 60s right through to the present day and their own creations like ‘High Tide on the Sea of Flesh’. It almost works perfectly, the only bad trip being the inexplicable inclusion of ‘Daydream’ which, although a fine track, serves only to break the spell due to an over familiarity caused by overexposure on crummy adverts for cars and compost.
The whole collection, from Hawkwind to Bo Diddley and Pentangle, is held loosely together by the ethereal, reverb drenched observations of the late great Vincent Price and Richard Harris. I can’t think of a single reason why any home should be without this collection, the perfect soundtrack to while away an autumn afternoon or two.
