Introducing Phantom Limb
What's your earliest musical memory?
Telling loads of French nudists to put their clothes on.
If you could hold a recording session with any five artists, who would you choose?
Aretha, Levon Helm, Leon Russel, Booker T Jones and Mavis Staples
You want to describe your music to a stranger on the street, who would you compare yourself to?
A cheese burger.
The reason why we think it sounds like a Cheeseburger is because when you want a cheeseburger you don’t want anything else. Chinese food isn’t going to work out, so it has to be a cheeseburger. The right amount of country, (the beef) the right amount of soul, (the cheese and the bun) the right amount of rock and roll, (salad elements and maybe mayo or mustard).
We are a product of our record collections, The Band, Staple Singers, Dylan, Ray Charles etc, we don’t copy what they do, but we see no shame in showing our influences.
You are going to live on a desert island for a year, which albums do you take with you?
Time (the revelater) - Gillian Welch
Highway To Hell - ACDC
Nashville Skyline - Bob Dylan
Harvest - Neil Young
Soul Folk In Action - The Staple Singers
Everyone has a defining music moment, one that lives on in the memory, what is yours?
Watching Skip Wiseman play the drums is at the top, just because he is one of the unsung heroes of the less is more session players of the 70's. Most session players are technically competent but they lack a voice or any kind of soul; Skip oozes soul with every hit.
And listening to Sam Cooke… How could one guy be a great business man, incredible writer, have arguably the best voice ever, and be so sickeningly good looking? Combine that with best mates with Muhammad Ali and that’s Sam Cooke.
Angus Young from ACDC shows us all that there is no trick to sounding fantastic. Meat and potatoes playing is all you need. No FX, no editing, no gimmicks, just a guitar and an amp. (and a school boy outfit)
What is the best gig you've ever been to and why?
Down From The Mountain show in Canada. They were all there: I saw Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Ralph Stanley. Awesome.
Also Neil Young at Glastonbury. Not some old guy trying to relive his youth rather than a guy and his guitar playing for his life. He owned that stage, no warming into it, straight in, no kissing. Song after song from over a forty year career. He sang beautifully and played hard. Great band using the right instruments for the sound, no DW drum kits or laptops, old guitars old amps, fat sound.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, what is the most embarrassing track or album that we'd find?
There is no such thing
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Doing what we are doing now: playing shows and making records.
How would you describe your debut album to us?
What's next for Phantom Limb?
First we are off to rural France to demo some new material eat well and drink fine wine. Touring with Will Young, then our own headling tour of the UK, New album next year, and so on. . . . . . .
