Bristolian country-soul sextet Phantom Limb announces a new single, a special edition album release and a national tour with Will Young this autumn.
“Phantom Limb may well be the most musically sophisticated (and satisfying) band the UK has produced in far too long a time…. What astonishes most is the sheer elegance and lightly-worn maturity of it all. Actually, that's not true. What astonishes most is just how good it is…..” – BBC Online
Phantom Limb go beyond the famous adage that 'less is more' with the simple and often forgotten principle that great music is about playing the right things at the right time.
A seamless amalgam of classic, southern soul, country blues and gospel, this is intelligent music-making with impeccably high standards. Few bands can boast a vocalist of the quality of Yolanda Quartey - a mix of Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples best describe the unique sound of Yolanda's burnished mahogany voice. Phantom Limb will restore your faith in contemporary music with their enigmatic song writing and raw elegance.
“….a warm beauty that belies the bleak subject matter” – Q Magazine
Formed after an impromptu Christmas jamming session in 2004, the band’s future crashed to a halt in 2006 when devastating illness forced Yolanda to stop singing. The album (and the band) stayed on ice for over six months while she recovered her voice, after which it seemed a good idea to start quietly with acoustic rehearsals. These proved revelatory as a more intimate yet powerful sound emerged, electric guitars were swapped for acoustics, double bass was brought in and, with Yolanda’s voice allowed to soar, beautiful country-gospel songs emerged. It was a whole new start - the recording process began all over again and Phantom Limb was reborn.
“Yolanda Quartey’s vocal delivery p***es all over the competition. 5/5” – Rock n Reel
‘Draw the Line’, a brand new recording, is a bluesy, waltzy tune with a strong melody and gorgeous gospel harmonies that underpin Yolanda’s beautiful soul voice. The song will be added on to a special edition of their self-titled album.
“Debut albums like this don’t come up often and they deserve a lot of praise. Magic” – glasswerk.co.uk
It seems almost mind-blowing that a band can drop jaws at SXSW, Glastonbury and Great Escape, be personally invited to support Will Young, Massive Attack, Beth Rowley and Candi Staton and either write or produce with Damon Albarn, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Skin (Skunk Anansie) and Will Young…and not be a household name….yet.
Having played at a series of festivals this summer Phantom Limb were Beth Rowley’s special guest at Bristol’s Colston Hall on September 24th and will be Will Young’s on his UK tour in November and December.
