The Vines - Winning Days

And so we are faced with another single from self-destructive Aussie Rockers The Vines, and we are just as equally underwhelmed. The title track from Winning Days, the band’s second album, sounds and feels as if Craig Nicholls’ band have missed the boat purely due to their own laziness. The market is slipping away from them, and at a time when The Pixies release a Greatest Hits amidst a comeback wave, is there any real need for The Vines other than to serve as pin-ups for the alternative teenage female?

The answer is no. This is soft rock at its most middle-of-road, devoid of grit and edge from a band who most of the time fail to hit their targets. You can understand The Vines’ potential on paper, and can’t blame the record execs for giving them a contract, but come renewal time let’s hope these men-in-suits rediscover their own senses.
