A BIT ABOUT GIRLS...
Taking the California template perfected by Brian Wilson and adding a scuzzy makeover, ‘Album’ is a record that perfectly captures the sun-baked outlook of life in their adopted San Francisco hometown, just as the Velvets crackled with New York electricity and Smiths’ songs came soaked in Manchester drizzle. You’ll detect 50s surf-pop, 60s psychedelia, 80s hardcore and blissed-out shoegaze at play here, not to mention more modern west coast sounds. But most of all you’ll hear the musical distillation of the frazzled San Fran lifestyle.
Girls are built around the powerful songwriting of Christopher Owens and the ethereal production of Chet ‘JR’ White. Christopher’s background – born into the Children Of God cult and spending his “pretty hellish” childhood travelling across the globe, attending prayer sessions whilst being shielded form the outside world before escaping to Texas aged 16 – had a massive impact on his songwriting, undoubtedly contributing to the spiritual quality in Girls’ music and providing a unique context for his brutally honest, heart-on-sleeve lyrics.
Chet ‘JR’ White is the other crucial part in the Girls partnership. Strong male friendships serve as the backdrop to some of the best rock'n'roll, from Mick'n'Keef through to John Squire and Ian Brown and Christopher and JR are no exception: Not only do they spend all their time together – writing, rehearsing, partying – they even share a bedroom after knocking down the wall that divided their two rooms. And as Christopher's innocent, open-hearted songs took shape, JR was on hand to conjure up the perfect musical backdrop: a kind of DIY Pet Sounds, recorded in bedrooms and rehearsal spaces on battered Reel To Reel tape and temperamental computers.
The result is ‘Album’, which will be release on Fantasytrashcan / Turnstile in the UK and Matador in the US. It features the full on fuzzy gospel explosion of Girls’ inspired debut single ‘Hellhole Ratrace’ as well as forthcoming second single ‘Lust For Life’ – 2 minutes 23 seconds of gloriously melodic, insanely catchy West Coast pop described by the band as "honest, loose, ethereal, obnoxious and perfect," ‘Album’ is a sincere, romantic tribute to the majesty of great pop music and the healing power of rock and roll.
Meanwhile, following some rapturously-received debut UK shows earlier in the year, Girls will return to the UK this Autumn. They stop off in London in September to play The Lexington before they tour Europe, and then return for a full UK tour in October, completed by a slot at the SWN Festival in Cardiff on the 23rd October.
