Mark Olson and The Creekdippers featuring Victoria Williams - King Tut's Wah-Wah Hut, Glasgow
After recording four albums with the Jayhawks, co-founder Mark Olson left the band to spend more time with his wife, Victoria Williams, also an alt.country icon who counts Pearl Jam and Alanis Morissette amongst her fans. Obviously disillusioned with his art getting lost in the marketing, Mark started writing and recording songs in their house away in the Joshua Tree desert. With a staggering seven albums now released under the guise of the Creekdippers, Mark and Victoria are back on tour once again (see dates below).
With the interesting addition of a trumpeter instead of a fiddler, The Creekdippers are always keen to experiment and operate sans setlist - dulcimer, mandolin, tres, kalimba, and wah-wah banjo all make an apparition at some point this evening. With a huge catalogue of songs between The Creekdipper's and Williams' solo releases, they evenly alternate between the two. The relaxed atmosphere, surreal onstage banter and loose style rapidly has the audience eating out of their hands. Olson's new material has taken a political turn with quite a few songs taken aim at Bush as well as his cronies but sounds just as good as ever. It's a shame that he doesn't play old Jayhawks songs but that's his choice and his solo material is equally good. Williams is, as ever, a master story teller conjuring up unusual characters (Tarbelly or Crazy Mary) as well as her simple but moving observations of life such as the beautiful This moment which they perform as an encore.
Though their musical style straddles folk, gospel, jazz and country, the band's enthusiasm transcends any stylistic clashes with all the musicians adding their own distinctive influences to the Creekdipping melting pot. It seems that as long as people keep coming to see them, The Creekdippers will serve up their unusual blend of music, content with having an audience that likes their music.
The Creekdippers have three (!) records hot off the press. Politcal Manfest can be bought at their website and in the shops I have now been informed. Mystic Theatre and Creekdippin' for the first time (a best of the first three releases) are available at Amazon.
