Various - Now 71
If your idea of the perfect compilation tracklisting sees the exemplary Sex On Fire immediately followed by the abomination of Kid Rock then, boy, Santa's got a treat for you. The annual end-of-year Now is always a big Christmas seller but, no matter how many stockings this fills, it's hard to forgive a mix that features two Katy Perry singles.
The first CD opens with Girls Aloud's The Promise, where sex is usurped by sparkle, and is followed by invariably glossy R'n'B chart hits. Disturbia is hardly Umbrella but, when it's rubbing shoulders with The Pussycat Dolls' gobsmackingly awful When I Grow Up, you'd be advised to just shut up and dance.
Or Shut Up and Let Me Go, if you listen to The Ting Tings's advice on 'side two', which goes some way to proving that there still are some quality hits in this new download-friendly chart. It opens with some wet indie, true - although I will argue my case for Coldplay's Viva La Vida when I bore you with my albums of the year in a fortnight's time. Once the Kaisers and Razorlight are out of the way though, make the most of Swedish pop heaven in the form of Robyn, Alphabeat and Ida Maria.
Oh, and Keane's Spiralling still has no right to be as good as it is. I wet my bed a little just writing that sentence.
