Various - Life Beyond Mars - Bowie Covered
"Life Beyond Mars - Bowie Covered" comprises vocal tributes to the Thin White Duke himself - Mr David Bowie.
It's a mixed and highly unsatisfying bag of 12 covers of the Starman's songs.
The compilation should be rewarded for pulling a few less familiar tracks from Bowie's songbook but I imagine there's a reason why some songs are more adored than others.
None of the covers on the album are up to much if truth be told and certainly don't deserve your attention before the originals are sampled.
I imagine this collection will appeal only to Bowie completists and fans of the artistes on offer.
I picked the album from the CD Times golden vault of promos due to the appearance of Brooklyn bohemians Au Revoir Simone with their cover of "Oh! you pretty things".
As much as I love the keyboard bashing trios work I found the cover a real plodding affair that could have done with speeding up.
It's still my favourite on the album as the rest offer nothing in the way of originality.
Some of the worst tracks on display are a heavy handed attack on "Ashes to ashes" from Leo Minor, Drew Brown's slaughter of one my Bowie faves "Sweet thing" and a completely bonkers take on "Life on Mars' from The Thing that just confused me!
So I suggest you should stick this back on the shelves (or delete it from your basket) and pick up a copy of "Hunky Dory" instead!
