Chikinki - Like It Or Leave It
Coming out of Bristol after sharing a house on Chikinki Heights and following on from the release of their debut single, Assassinator 13 - the NME gave it runner-up single of the week - Chikinki's Like It Or Leave It mixes acoustic pop with squelching synths out of early Chemical Brothers recordings. Despite sounding like a combination that's struggled to work outside of the occasional use of acoustic guitars on dance albums - The Chemical Brothers have, for one, mixed euphoric dance and gentler pop - Like It Or Leave It is actually a great single.
With a slight opening, the keyboards stutter in between lyrics and over the chorus and despite the vocals getting lost not far from the off, Like It Or Leave It is a good indication of Chikinki's album, released in May 2004, being one to look for providing they can deliver another twelve or thirteen tracks of this standard.
The same can't be said, however, for Pervy Song nor the later Tom Neville's Bed It Or Burn It Remix, both of which will doubtless be given time they don't deserve due to the quality of the opening track.
