Various - Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump

With current media darlings, Vampire Weekend, dabbling in African rhythms, what better time to sample the real thing? Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump promises apparently obscure "Afrobeat, highlife & Afro funk" from the 1970s; in layman's terms, it jumps between the distinctly African (e.g. Onyame) and tracks which betray the influence of popular imported music. Sung in English and utilising funky organ, Everybody Likes Something Good sounds like 60s psychedelic pop, while Africa Irie could have easily been pulled from a Trojan reggae compilation. It's an interesting niche release, pleasingly rough round the edges and with rhythms and guitar work that often border on the nigglingly addictive.
