Various - Massive R&B Collection - Spring Collection 2007
Every six months or so, there's a new one of these chart R 'n' B compilations and, for some reason, I'm always surprised by how consistently rubbish they are. This one is especially thin on innovation, not one Umbrella nestled in amongst two discs of chaff.
The positively annoying Soulja Boy 'cranks' the package into action, which is the only warning sign one really needs. While Timbaland gives 50 Cent his only bearable hit and Ghostface Killah's impressive Back Like That breaks through the gloss, the first disc is surely only listenable to those whose idea of a great Saturday night is downing paint-stripper wine in the 'Ice Room' at Oceana.
The second disc falls foul of the same clean chart nonsense, making Amy Winehouse's Love is a Losing Game sound even more heartbreakingly classic in comparison. Ending the ordeal is another classy female, the late Aaliyah whose effortlessly sexy Rock the Boat makes one wonder if all the soul was ripped from R 'n' B music when she was.
