Various Artists - Well Deep: 10 Years Of Big Dada
Nina Tune offshoot Big Dada celebrates ten years of showcasing new hip-hop from both sides of the Atlantic with this decade-spanning release. Probably the label's biggest name, the chart-bothering Roots Manuva, contributes three tracks, including the glitchy, winsome Colossal Insight and the simply monstrous Witness, while self-proclaimed godfather of grime Wiley impresses on recent single 50/50, singing the praises of his label and in particular the equal share of profits guaranteed in his contract.
The always-spectacular Diplo provides a couple of tracks, both interesting snapshots of his evolution into a world-renowned DJ vaunted for his ability to imbue beats with a truly global feel. TY demonstrates his class as a master storyteller with a brace of cuts, while the explicit Spank Rock prove ever-so-slightly tiresome in their attempts to shock on Sweet Talk.
Elsewhere, Anti-Matter, a song from one of MF Doom's numerous side projects King Geedorah works perfectly to cultivate an ice-cool party atmosphere. The ridiculously-monickered Worcestershire Sauce let the side down, bringing to mind as they do the green cockney rapper from the Mighty Boosh, whereas the wilful strangeness of CLOUDdead proves a real treat on Peel session track Physics of a Bicycle and their oddball tendencies are even more accentuated thanks to a remix job from Boards of Canada.
Well Deep is much more than your average knocked-out compilation, offering an eclectic, exciting and consistently enjoyable glimpse at the talents of the Big Dada roster. Well worth a spin.
