Various - Godskitchen Global Gathering 2007

Godskitchen and Global Gathering don't need any introduction in the world of dance. Featuring a mix of new and classic tracks, this three disc release ties in with the 2007 weekend held near Stratford Upon Avon in July.

CD one focuses on house. The MSTRKRFT and Axwell remixes of Justice's D.A.N.C.E. and Sunfreaks' Counting Down the Days respectively beat the originals. In the case of the latter, the sax and a snippet of vocal are spun out into a feet stompin', hand clappin' (if still rather cheesy) summer anthem. Especially for aging clubbers, another appearance from Axwell (I Found You (Remode Instrumental)) has some welcome old school breaks, and a couple of early 90s tunes (Do You Want It Right Now, Passion) have been given new makeovers. Also worth mentioning are remixes of The Chemical Brothers' Do It Again and Robyn's With Every Heartbeat, which, if not as good as the originals, are still pleasing to the ear.

Disc two has more of a trance vibe. Although it has some decently rousing moments (Paul Van Dyk's White Lies (Dave Spoon Remix), Dubfire's Roadkill)), there is also the occasional clunker of the type surely only Dave Pearce could love (see Anthem).

Disc three is a blend of anthemic house and trance, past and present. Kicking off with Tom Neville's remix of Acceptable In The 80s, which is, well, more acceptable than the annoying original, it moves on to excellent tunes from the likes of Soulwax and Basement Jaxx and later quite possibly the best trance track ever, Xpander. Indeed, nestling it amongst other trance numbers doesn't do them any favours, demonstrating how sonically dull much of the rest of the genre is by comparison. Oh well.

Overall Godskitchen Global Gathering 2007 can be recommended - to those who missed the party as well as those looking to fill in the gaps.
