Tall Pony - I'm Your Boyfriend Now
Listeners to the likes of Rob Da Bank and Huw Stephens will know I'm Your Boyfriend Now as the other spoken word commandment track to have received a decent amount of airplay since the end of 2006 (the other of course being Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip's Thou Shalt Always Kill). Tall Pony's offering is, at least on the surface, a far more solemn affair, and was obviously recorded on a very low budget. The slow beat and murky atmosphere could only liven up a funeral. You ain't going to be dancing to this one.
And the words? These take the form of rules a girlfriend must abide by. The story goes Tall Pony (duo, Paul Towey and Tony Gage) compete to see who can write the nastiest lyrics. It shows. Still, however wickedly dry "Your armpits must not become too hairy" and "I will only ever spend a maximum of three hours at your parents' house" are (the delivery more in the manner of a petulant man-child than controlling psychopath), they aren't quite as memorable as "Thou Shalt not think any male over the age of 30 that plays with a child that is not their own is a paedophile. Some people are just nice." I Hate Your Family arguably has better lines than the main track. "You're proud of your youngest sister because she's a policewoman, but she just loves the violence."
This is an intriguing first release from Tall Pony, and a must buy for misanthropes with a sense of humour.
