Herman Dune - Giant

I ususally don't go for this sort of thing at all. Indeed, I've been fighting myself as to whether i can recomend this LP for a few weeks now. And i think the result of this scrap is that Herman Dunne's Giant just about gets the nod, but i really can't be sure of it....

The main doubt i have, is that this kind of thing always borders on the unimaginative hippie acoustic singalong that's all very cool, but lacking anything of any substance or lasting value...

Yes boss, this is the sort of fayre that's most normally sung by a bubble haired pretty boy sitting around a camp fire in Thailand. You know, the sort who avoids all responsibility and plays sweet tunes to the tourist girls to ensure he gets a different one every night..

I mean this line from this very album pretty much sumarises my point...

'I kissed the cutest little greek girl who gave me some soda and a little blue pearl'

Indeed, this whole song and some of the others is this whole kind of 'I travelled the world and saw loads of things. And I found myself, and i might do it some more, and find some more of myself' etc

However, the one thing that just about rescuses this LP from Travelsphere for me, is that this particular Hippy Boy does perhaps have a little more about him than your average rainbow...

On 'Giant' there's some complex instrumentation and one or different styles that meld quite nicely and I don't mind to hear it playing away in the background and sometimes I like it..

Also, in places, I can't help but think of Peter Gabriel. I think perhaps the groove is similar to PGs South African stuff of the late 80s or whenever it was..

Anyway. the long and the short of it is, if you're fond of a rhythmically folk fun world guitar, give this a damn good try...
