Carlton Patterson & King Tubby - Black & White In Dub
Dub - the art of stripping out vocals from reggae tracks, emphasising rhythms and heavy bass, distorting existing sounds and adding effects - is considered a forerunner of modern dance music. These 21 tracks, produced by Carlton Patterson, then mixed by King Tubby - one of dub's most influential figures -, blessed the b-sides of single releases. Most are on CD here for the first time. A few of them stick out (Black Lash, for example, borrowing the horn riff from Ring Of Fire), but mainly this collection will have your foot tapping rather than truly hold your attention. To the unitiated, it's all likely to sound very similar, so, as with most collections of b-sides, it can only be wholly recommended to aficionados.
