The Cinematic Orchestra feat Fontella Bass - Breathe
Given the timeless quality of the vocal, one may be excused for initially thinking The Cinematic Orchestra have sampled an old jazz record for Breathe. In actual fact, it was freshly provided by still living (if frail) soul legend, Fontella Bass. The apparent subject matter is facing death, using the sea as a metaphor. It is perhaps fitting that the track is slowww - yes, even slower than Radiohead's Pyramid Song, which is also apparently about death - and the twilight poignancy is genuinely affecting. After which heaviness, saxophone-led instrumental Colours, although still contemplative, seems something of a respite and is quietly uplifting - just.
The album La Fleur is released on May 7th.
