Ibrahim Ferrer & Omara Portuondo - Rhythms Del Mundo
I love cover versions. Of course some are complete crap, but when you get a good one it not only gives you joy, but adds a clever little trick to your DJ ability that often leads to attractive women/men looking at you in a serious way and asking intelligent questions about what the hell it is you think you’re playing..
My favourite full LPs of covers would have to be a toss up between Lennon and McCartney: Tijuana Style, Hymns: Tijuana Style (both on Music For Pleasure) and Flying High: The New Generation Singers (Polydor). All are pure and utter class and must be long overdue a re-release….
Rhythms Del Mundo might not be quite as good as these, but it’s not half bad either…
So what’s it all about??
Well, Ibrahim Ferrer & Omar Portuondo are 2 of the musicians featured in the massively successful Buena Vista Social Club LP/film and here they are back with what amounts to a greatest hits of covers, played Cuban style…
Now, I don’t know if Universal have got them by the balls and forced them to do what is essentially promo work for other artists to justify and recoup an over-ambitious advance, or whether this is a project they have their full and heart and soul in.
Whichever or neither, there are many good moments.
In particular I like ‘Clocks’ by Coldplay, mainly because it swipes the seriousness and miserability out of Chris Martin and sways his reluctant booty into a little dance..
Meanwhile ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’ conjures images of Bono Vox in a Hawaiian skirt, dancing and swaying soulfully on the beach by himself (and no doubt to a TV audience of millions)
‘She will be loved’ is nice and ‘Killing Me Softly’ made me wonder just what happened to The Fugee’s
Yeah, I reckon there’s enough on here to recommend it actually …
