Future Of The Left - Fingers Become Thumbs!
This is the kind of single that should benefit from the new changes in the UK Singles Chart. Just under two minutes of pure, unadultured noise madness. The Future Of The Left is the other half of Mclusky, not the Shooting At Unarmed men lot, but singer/guitarist Andy Falkous and drummer Jack Egglestone. This debut double 'A' side single is a complete blast of fresh air and those hankering after more Mclusky madness, this is for you. The music still sounds as fractured and as harsh as it ever did, the obvious influence of Steve Albini ever present, but this is back to the original Mclusky, no indie rock here, this is an aggressive and harsh listen.
"Fingers Become Thumbs!" may only be short, but it packs a punch. Squealing guitars chug and duel across Falkous' odd and warbling vocals. I can't tell you what it's about, but it sounds great. Even better is the flip side "The Lord Hates A Coward". The music jarrs and whirls around heavy, fuzzed up guitars and features Falkous' stream of concious lyrics turning up the immortal "She has a lot of pickled onions / hanging from her thighs" but followed up with unnerving "violence solved everything" interspursed with violent screaming. This is such a great burst of noise that it's quickly become one of my favourite tracks of the year already. This isn't for the faint of heart, this is something truly left field and if this is the future, sign me up.
