Various - The Very Best of School Reunion
Who buys this tat ? I'll you - people who, when they're asked what music they like, reply "Ooh, a bit of 80s ?" The question mark is intentional. Partly because invariably the Heat-imbibing sucker you're talking to has a severe case of Australian Inflexion Syndrome, and partly because they're not 100% sure that they actually do like "the 80s". Because they know, deep down, that they're wrong. They're so un-committed to the actual concept of being enthusiastic about pop music, they've become lazy and accepting. I mean, I like the 80s, too, if I'm being honest. It's just that I don't see many compilation albums featuring the Blue Nile, REM or the Comsat Angels. Oops - smug and superior ... bah ...
So, for those of you who like going to parties in pub function rooms, let's see what we've got here. Amongst the usual toss (Wham!, Men at Work, Kajagoogoo, Nik Kershaw, Go West, Spandau Ballet with the 'genre's' nadir - 'Gold') are a few gems. Dexy's Midnight Runners ('Geno'), Blondie 'Denis', The Undertones ('Teenage Kicks'.) There are a couple of decent pieces of plastic pop from Laura Branigan and Belinda Carlisle but I'm struggling after that. Most of these songs remind me of adverts.
Look, none of this is worthy of re-assessment. It stank then, it's even worse now. Just don't trust anyone who tells you they love this stuff. At all. What they really mean is they quite like Culture Club, Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran. At least they think they do.
