Beck - Cellphone's Dead
If I ever received a visit from the wish-giving pop-fairy, I have often thought that I would choose Beck as the musician I would most like to be. Cool, effortless, dripping in charm and invention, he populates a unique position where he seems able to do pretty much whatever he pleases. Latest album The Information is a close cousin to Guero, full of songs that whilst often appearing shambolic are actually tightly woven gems, packing in more ideas than others have in entire careers.
Latest single Cellphone's Dead is such a song, at first listen sounding rather sparse once the sparkling intro is over. Lacking in instrumentation, it features a wonderful, full sounding dub bass guitar, very little reverb and echo catapulting the notes which come thudding out of the speaker. It is a song that needs repeated listening to truly open the ears to its charms.
Time and again Beck proves why he deserves his unique position - releasing songs full of wit and style that are sit up straight downright interesting. Long may this continue.
