Darkel

Perhaps the name is meant to be significant. But the truth is Darkel, the solo project from Air's JB Dunckel, is more dull than dark. Opening track, Be my friend, is promising; spacey and retro-futuristic, you might wonder exactly what it is the other bloke does. At least before you hear the rest of the record.

The problem here is down to what Air don't do: sing. Only Bathroom Spirit is an instrumental (and not a particularly inspiring one at that). Dunckel's voice is rather too limp to carry a whole album, especially undisguised and paired mainly to backing reminiscent of Air at their most pedestrian. A couple of tunes might sink in, but chances are you’ll dose through the majority.
