Mastodon - Capillarian Crest

Formed in Atlanta in 1999, Mastodon have been described by Kerrang! magazine as "the best band on the planet" and "the future of metal". Their style could be classified as a more technical metal - intricate guitar riff with ever changing time signatures, and prog influences during long, melodic instrumental interludes.

This, the lead single from forthcoming album Blood Mountain, sees them throwing all of this into the pot, the result being a challenging and complex slice of metal that twists and turns. The guitar is fast and heavy, the vocals sparse. The song reaches a mighty climax, full of powerhouse drums and a chugging guitar line.

The album also sounds pretty promising - mixed by Rich Costey of Muse fame, it features guest performances by members of the Mars Volta and also Josh Homme. The album is out on the 11 September, and a review will follow shortly. Mastodon are currently touring with Slayer in the US.
