Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing
The funny thing about the Scissor Sisters, in my life at least, is that their songs sound exactly like the music my dad used to make us listen to in the seventies on his Cortina car stereo. On every holiday journey or trip to Wales to visit Uncle Emyln (note: not my real uncle), we were accompanied by tapes of Gilbert O’Sullivan, Elton John and Leo Sayer
And here we have the lead single from their second album and it REALLY reminds me of that era and those boring car journeys. In fact, Elton John is responsible for the piano on this track, which actually isn’t all that bad. In particular it really takes me back to the days of sitting on the backseat with my brother singing away to Leo Sayer (and it would be no stretch of the imagination to guess which Leo song it makes me think of).
The last couple of years have seen people embrace the idea of “the guilty pleasure” in music, and here we have a song that takes all those elements, wrapping them up in a sparkling modern production. Whilst the sentiment of the song is slightly downbeat, the tune is bright and cheerful and I am sure in a couple of months we’ll all be thoroughly sick of it.
