Cerys Matthews - London Scala
Ex Catatonia frontwoman Cerys Matthews performed a set at London's intimate Scala to promote her new album "Never said goodbye".
Cerys has been keeping a fairly low profile in recent years after relocating to Nashville. Her debut solo album "Cockahoop" suprised a lot of people as it had country music at it's heart which was a world away from the Britpop era's "Mulder and Scully".Cery's new album "Never said goodbye"still retains it's country roots but is slightly more leftfield and rockier than the previous release.
Several tracks from the album were showcased tonight including forthcoming single "Open roads",set opener "Streets of New York","A bird in the hand" and "Blue light alarm".
"Cockahoop" fans weren't disappointed either as the majority of the rest of the set was taken from her debut."Caught in the middle","The good in goodbye" and "Only a fool" all benefited from the slightly rockier approach.
There were two suprises during the set.The first came three songs in when Catatonia classic "Lost cat" got an airing, the only nod to their back catalogue.
The second was a cover of David Bowie's "Soul love" from the "Ziggy Stardust" album.Cerys admitted to the audience at the beginning of the set that she was fairly nervous, however by the time "Soul love" had come around she had ditched her guitar and was enjoying herself with careless abandon.
Cerys has more dates in the pipeline which should be attended if you've ever loved her voice as she's one of the most passionate singers performing today.
