Erykah Badu - Somerset House
Miss Erykah Badu graced Somerset House’s open-air courtyard over a sunny July weekend, providing a generous dose of music therapy.
When I saw Erykah three years ago at the Brixton Academy, she came on stage late. This time, I nearly missed her entrance. I was guzzling white wine spritzers in the press tent, expecting a repeat performance of tardiness. Luckily the loud claps and cheers alerted me to the stage.
Using a tambourine, a mini-keyboard and her powerful voice, she delighted the crowd with her stage presence, vocal expression and inventive music style. She danced, philosophized, DJed and let us have a glimpse of her gorgeous baby, who toddled on stage during her performance of Stay. Highlights of the concert were the classic On & On and the emotive I Want You, she also “took us back”, performing her interpretation of great hip hop classics.
It was an inspiring and intimate evening ending with a mini-stage dive for the lucky people in the front of the stage.
