The Rifles - No Love Lost
It's hard to listen to The Rifles without one's thoughts drifting to Ordinary Boys, Hard-Fi or - unsurprisingly given the band's name - The Jam. This is short, sharp guitar pop (smoothed around the edges by producer Ian Broudie), with songs about girls, shagging, drinking and violence. Is there any other way for a young British band to announce themselves?
Judging The Rifles solely against their contemporaries, No Love Lost has nothing as good as Hard To Beat, but thankfully nothing as annoying as... just about any Ordinary Boys track you've ever heard. If you can get over the fact that it's a bit meat and potatoes, this isn't a bad set of at times pretty catchy songs.
