Mercury Music Prize UPDATE: List announced

The twelve 2006 Nationwide Mercury Prize UK Albums of the Year will be revealed at 11.30am on Tuesday 18 July 2006. The announcement will be made in central London by Jools Holland.

Albums released between July 2005 and July 2006 are eligible for this year’s Nationwide Mercury Prize, which celebrates the best of UK music. All genres of music are treated equally and the music on the album is the only thing taken into account. Recent winners of the Prize have included Antony and the Johnsons, Franz Ferdinand and Dizzee Rascal.

‘It has been a really strong year for UK music. With so many great albums out there at the moment, I’m really looking forward to the announcement. It has the potential to be a classic Nationwide Mercury Prize list!’ said Jools Holland.

All twelve of the Albums of the Year will be honoured at the Nationwide Mercury Prize Awards Show on Tuesday 5 September, when the overall winner will also be announced.

The list is now with us for the panel to have a long hard think about:

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas
Editors - The Back Room
Guillemots - Through The Windowpane
Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
Hot Chip - The Warning
Muse - Black Holes And Revelations
Zoe Rahman - Melting Pot
Lou Rhodes - Beloved One
Scritti Politti - White Bread, Black Beer
Sway - This Is My Demo
Thom Yorke - The Eraser

So, should there be someone on there who isn't?
Who should win?

It's been a good year for British music. I think it'll be hard to look beyond the obvious Arctic Monkeys winning it, but there's plenty of good records on the list.

See what CD Times thinks of:
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Guillemots live in Manchester
Editors live in Cambridge
Scritti Politti - White Bread Black Beer
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
