The Flaming Lips - The W.A.N.D.

At War With the Mystics marked a change of pace for a band whose mission in life seems to be a quest to mystify and confuse with every turn. Some felt it a step backwards from the lush arrangements of Yoshimi, whilst others embraced the harder, funkier sound. None though could deny that lead single The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song was a rather glorious little pop song, vigorous and entertaining.

The W.A.N.D. though could not be more different, a hard hitting, fuzzed up sound that brings out a quality seldom seen in The Flaming Lips – rage, anger, and quite a bit of aggression. The hacksaw buzz sound of the leading guitar is quite an assault, whilst distorted drums whirl up a storm, whipping around Wayne Coyne’s yelping vocals. All in all a good song, a welcome change to see the band flex a bit more muscle than usual.
