The Fix List Playlist by Sam Morrow

Currently touring the UK, we asked Texan singer-songwriter Sam Morrow to tell us his favourite ten tracks. His eclectic mix is an insight into the influences on his music.

Robert Palmer - 'Sailing Shoes'

I recently got introduced to this record, produced by Lowell George. The band on it is The Meters. A dream combination in my world. Robert takes this Little Feat original and turns it on its head with some right out funk with some Clav and a classic Meters low end.

Steve Earle -'I Feel Alright'

This is my favorite Steve Earle record. It was his first record after sobering up, which I can relate to. If my life was a Itas movie, this would play in the closing credits.

Red Shahan - 'Waterbill'

Red is one of my favorite writers around today. The imagery he conveys is top notch especially with this anthem to spending more than your means. You can’t go wrong with some CCR vibes either.

Mike and The Moonpies - 'Getting High At Home'

This is my favorite country crew right now. Some down-home Honky-Tonk talking about drinking in the Honky-Tonk and getting high at home.

Brent Cobb - 'Sucker For A Good Time'

Brent Cobb is doing it right. Spreading the gospel of country funk on his new record. The whole thing is great but this one is my favorite. He has such a knack for funky verses and monster hooks, and this is that on display.

Bobby Charles - 'Street People'

Bobby is the king of what they call swamp pop. Sign me up. He tapped The Band to back him up on this record and it takes you right to some gumbo and beignets.

Willie Watson - 'On the Road Again'

Willie has such a classic voice. He instantly takes you back to old folk tunes. This recording has such a cool swagger with the low end being taken care of by vocals and some periodic but perfectly time ad-libs. Try not to smile while listening to this.

Sarah Shook and the Disarmers - 'New Ways to Fail'

Sarah is a badass. It’s like if Loretta Lynn listened to Nirvana and TSOL and decided that she wanted to turn it into a country song. All of her lyrics are so clever funny and relatable. Some awesome steel playing too.

Billy Joe Shaver - 'Love You Till The Cows Come Home'

I could name dozens of Billy Joe songs that I love, but this is the one that's currently rotating in my world. A different groove than you’re used to from him on a classic Texas love song.

ZZ Top - 'Chevrolet'

I always have something from ZZ Top in my rotation, and this is the currently listening. The guitar lick is so spanky. It makes you wanna hop in the truck and go for a meaningless drive.

You can catch Sam on his tour of the UK until 4th February, for all the dates and to book tickets visit his website. He's playing AmericanaFest in Hackney, London on 30th January 2019.
