"A lot has happened to me throughout my career and now I often feel like I’m pretty bulletproof" The return of Chloe Howl

Hey Chloe, how’s your day going so far?

It’s going good! I have been caught in the rain twice already but the sun is currently shining.

What have you been up to today?
My days pretty much only just starting! Which is pretty lazy seeing as it’s almost midday. But I stayed at a friends last night so am heading home from there.

So, before your singles last year, you went away for a while, where’d you go?
I parted ways with my label, and since I had been working solidly since I was about 16, I took a few months out to have fun.. and then focussed on finding the team and songs I have now.

What’s the main thing that’s changed about you in that time?
I think I’m just generally a lot more resilient. A lot has happened to me throughout my career and now I often feel like I’m pretty bulletproof.

What does the songwriting “process” look like for you?

I have a big folder of lyric ideas in my phone that dates all the way back to 2014. I tend to go into a session and we work on the vibe of the track, pick out some melodies, and then I usually dip into that folder for inspiration for the words.

Tell us about the new EP.
I’ve been working on it for the past few years. I think it’s a good reflection of my headspace throughout that time, and where I am musically right now.

Really loving the new track ‘23’, what can you tell us about that song?
I wrote it a few days after New Year’s Eve this year. I spent it with a long-term childhood friend and tbh it was quite morbid - we basically got wine drunk and lamented about how being thrust into the adult world isn’t quite what “friends” had us expecting. And I really wanted to write more about platonic affection and so '23' was born.

What’s coming up in 2019?
I have a show on the 23rd January at the Moth Club, and then some new music that I’m finishing as we speak.

As you’ve released EPs so far I wanted to ask where you are with albums; are they a dead format?
I definitely think albums are less and less relevant. However, I think the way artists such as Beyoncé have created a whole visual landscape around their albums are at least bringing another element to the process of consuming records. I think a truly great album is still just as poignant as it ever was - the way we consume it is just changing.

I saw the video for work, it looks a) wet, and b) great. Was that fun to make?
At first it was not fun to make cos I was like “you people are really gonna make me dance half naked in the freezing cold rain at 5am?” - But when the dancers arrived a bit with SO MUCH ENERGY and enthusiasm, and I wasn’t dealing with the weather alone anymore it became a proper vibe! A lot of my friends came and joined in too which was great.

Obviously there’s a lot of talk about equality in general at the moment, what’s your experience of being treated differently as a woman in your industry?

There’s definitely a difference in how you’re spoken to as a woman in music, how you’re perceived and what’s expected in you. I think women are obviously the most sexualised in the industry but somehow also the most infantilised. There’s a lot of work to do, but we’re getting there.

Have you noticed a difference over the last few months as #MeToo and #TimesUp gain publicity?
I think there’s definitely an air of consequence that wasn’t around before. The industry is finally being made aware that their actions have victims and that they will be held accountable.

If you could recommend one artist to hear this week, who would it be?
I’m really into Amber Mark at the minute.

What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?

You should’ve asked me what my deepest darkest secret is Cos it’s juicy AF but guess now you’ll never know.

Finally, how do you take your coffee?
I like a flat white with oat milk and one sugar. Hipster.
