Stormzy Announces 'The Stormzy Scholarship'

Stormzy has today announced 'The Stormzy Scholarship', a brand new scheme which will see four British black students provided with funding during their studies at the University Of Cambridge.

Today is A-Level results day, and Stormzy returned to his old school, Harris Academy in Crystal Palace to make his big announcement. He said:

"There are so many young black kids all over the country who have the level of academic excellence to study at a university such as Cambridge - however we are still under-represented at leading universities. I hope this scholarship serves as a small reminder that if young black students wish to study at one of the best universities in the world, then the opportunity is yours for the taking."

Despite achieving six A*s, three As and three Bs at GCSE, Stormzy did not attend university himself due to a rapidly developing music career. But the keen spokesman for black empowerment and social activism is keen to make sure young people aren't priced out of a good education.

'The Stormzy Scholarship' covers the full cost of tuition fees and provides a maintenance grant for four students for up to four years of study on any undergraduate course. The first two students on the scholarship will start courses this academic year in October with two more selected for 2019 entry.

The University of Cambridge accepted 58 black students in the last academic year, a record high. The University is committed to doing more to encourage young BAME students to apply for places at Oxbridge, and in turn, feel supported during their time at the university.

To be eligible for 'The Stormzy Scholarship', applicants need to be of black ethnicity and holding an unconditional offer to Cambridge University. Applications must be submitted no later than 31st August 2018. Students wishing to apply for 2019 entry should visit the UCAS website and apply no later than 15th October.
