Frank Turner - Be More Kind

The UK's most popular punk-folk-er is an interesting proposition. Frank Turner has had one single get to number 40, and you'll likely never hear him playlisted on BBC Radio 1 or 2, yet his last two albums (2013's Tape Deck Heart and 2015's Positive Songs For Negative People) both hit number two on the album chart and he's hosting his own four day festival in London and playing the UK's biggest arenas in 2019. He's a contradiction. What it shows is that he does what he does well, and for his fans; they're fervent. And chances are that Be More Kind will be his first number one album.

There's a theme running through Turner's music, which probably accounts for his popularity, he's almost unstintingly positive. The title track is the obvious example but there's also '21st Century Survival Blues' which starts off looking bleak but ends up as a paean to loved ones. And Turner's innate British-ness also makes him loveable, hear the ever-so-polite 'Make America Great Again'

"Well I know I'm just an ignorant Englishman / But I'd like to make America great again / So if you'll forgive my accent and the cheek of it / Here's some suggestions from the special relationship"

While '1933' and 'Brave Face' aim to raise the rabble, most of the music here is light-touch and made for the every-person; it's accessible, melodic, and as demanding as you want it to be.

Overall

The UK's foremost punk-folk-rocker returns with an album that's perfect for 2018.
