Whitney Rose - Rule 62
One of our favourite artists, Whitney Rose, returns after treating us to her South Texas Suite EP back in February. With her third full-length album, Rule 62, she delivers more of her a trademarked cowboy-booted country music. Having moved the Austin, Texas from Canada since her last full-length record Rose has more life experience under her belt, as well as the pick of some hugely talented local musicians. Alongside the realism of the Canadian's lyrics is an adherence to rule 62: don't take yourself too damn seriously.
Picking up where her EP left off Rule 62 collects together a set of thoughtful country tunes laced with a healthy cynicism, and disregard for too much sincerity. Whether it’s opener ‘I Don't Want Half (I Just Want Out)’ or ‘You Never Cross My Mind’ there are plenty of traditional songs here, touching on broken relationships, but each with a twist in the words. The vivid story of a ‘Trucker’s Funeral’ and the blues funk of ‘Can’t Stop Shakin’’ show Rose’s talent at twisting music as well as lyrics. It’s a cracking record that continues her steep trajectory, and shows she's living true to Rule 62.
