The Maccabees - Latchmere
It's not everyday you get to hear a song telling you how good a leisure centre is, but that is the very thing that "Latchmere" is about - the joys of going for a swim at your favourite pool. So we get lyrics about veruca socks, changing cubicles, and about "staying in your lane". There might be a hidden message behind all this, but one fact from listening to this song is certain - "Latchmere has got a wave machine". Worth a visit then.
Latchmere is a cracking little song, which sounds a shade like The Futureheads, full of tapping drums and spiky guitars. A catchy little number that will make you smile and maybe even make you feel like a swim. The Maccabees hail from Brighton, and are a five piece full of inventive ideas and fine songs. The two additional tracks are pretty good as well, short and sweet with plenty of bite. Of the two, I rate "Happy Slap" higher, with some really fine punk riffing as it bounces along.
"Latchmere" is starting to build attention on XFM in London - it won't be long until the world starts to hear more of The Maccabees.
