The Seal Cub Clubbing Club - EP Two

The Seal Cub Clubbing Club (TSCCC) carry on the trend of bands coming from Merseyside who have their own peculiar take on things, they're own imitable slant on life. There must be something in the air, as we've had The Coral and The Zutons recently who have all taken the pop aesthetic and spun it in a truly unique manner.

Of the 5 tracks on there, none of them have a true indie-pop edge to them; I can't see these guys gracing Top Of The Pops anytime soon. The Coral always manage to spin out one or two pop gems per album, but there's none of that here. That's not to say this isn't good, it's just not instantly accessible. I'm Gonna Get That Rabbit is a meandering track based around a simple guitar and drums whilst World Of Fashion, which is the stand out track here, wouldn't have sounded out of place on the new Mystery Jets album, a Floyd-esque number complete with a great guitar riff which dominates proceedings with the vocals delivered in a style Mark E. Smith would be proud of. Celine comes across just like every other guitar-based band does at the moment, all Gang Of Four angular guitars and edgy delivery and is the closest to anything like a single on here.

This is an interesting EP and certainly tickles the taste buds for what else they could do... If they could just hone their ideas and become a bit more consistent, they might release something to make people sit up and take notice.
