Lucy Rose - Something's Changing

Lucy Rose’s effortlessly beautiful voice floats atop of the lovely tunes that populate her latest release Something’s Changing. The arrangements are simple and elegant, it is the voice that takes centre stage here. The album commences with just Rose accompanied with a harp paying quietly in the background. The song soon morphs into the melancholic ‘Is This Called Home’, the harp replaced by a distorted guitar and strings.

There is a wistfulness in the songs; a longing for something you can’t quite put your finger on. Rose’s voice escapes the confines of the songs like a child colouring outside the lines. The restlessness continues in the fidgety “Strangest of Ways’ with Rose lamenting “I’ve got everything but time on my hands.” In ‘Floral Dresses - The Staves’ the singer battles her disapproving family in a bid to follow her own path: “I see the way you look at me / You don’t have to tell me.” There is defiance in these songs, but a sadness too. The journey has not been an easy one. As Rose sings in ’Find Yourself’ “Take your time and don’t lose sight of who we want to be.” Judging by this lovely album Lucy Rose is definitely on the right path.

Overall

Another solid effort.
