Hazel English shares video for That Thing
Hazel English has posted her video for the gorgeous 'That Thing' on YouTube - sounding like Lucky Soul and The School, her brand of shoegaze pop is sure to find some fans on the TDF team.
Following the release of Just Give In / Never Going Home (a hybrid 2xEP format combining the first EP, Never Going Home, with the new EP, Just Give In), Hazel English today drops the stunning visuals for her Justin Raisen-produced single "That Thing." The eerie video which seems straight from the school of David Lynch and his classic series Twin Peaks, was made by Kelia Anne and Luca Venter, a creative duo based in Denver, Colorado. They are known for their post-modern conceptions that "tantalize with the bizarre" - combining improvisational style, throwback aesthetic, uncommon use of colour, and soft lighting to glorious effect. Since 2015 they have collaborated on numerous photo series, films, editorials and exhibitions - most notably on Tennis' 2017 album Yours Conditionally and their recently published series Crisis Of The Real. In their video for "That Thing," Kelia & Luca "explore the idea of isolation, creating stylized environments, heavy and ominous in their seclusion."Having tallied up over eleven-million plays before her debut album is even recorded, Hazel English has become an online sensation, largely due to the runaway success of her debut single Never Going Home. The EP title-track not only laid the foundation of her blissed out and reverb heavy brand of alt-pop, but also serves as an example life imitating art; becoming Hazel's ticket to jet-setting success. It perfectly sums up her journey from a high-school grad in Melbourne to a creative writing student in California, and her transformation from a fledgling poet to one of the most hotly tipped artists to emerge in 2017. Never Going Home instantly connected to fans the world over, without so much as a press release it received 500k plays on her Soundcloud, topped Hype Machine and got her signed to Marathon Artists imprint House Anxiety (Courtney Barnett, King Krule). The 2xEP is completed by 10 more tracks including previous singles "Fix" and "Control," fan favourite "I'm Fine," and latest single "That Thing." It is technically a bonus track, the first she has recorded with Pitchfork-heralded "producer of the future" Justin Raisen (Angel Olsen, Sky Ferreira), and it's the kind of shimmering outlier you'd expect from a bonafide star, a perfectly-paced collision of stirring synths and circuiting basslines.
