Corinne Bailey Rae
It is safe to say that Yorkshire’s Bailey Rae is one of 2006’s hottest tips and most anticipated artists. Her first established song, Like A Star, has been hugely successful on the play-lists of Radio 1 Extra, Radio 2 and Capital Radio, however it looks as though next single, Put Your Records On, is destined for further mainstream success with a much-plugged video already beaming around the nation’s TV sets. It is in fact the weakest track off her self-titled debut album and is unfortunately reminiscent of the type of tune written for Pop Idol winners!
However all is not lost, as the rest of the LP is flooded with pleasurable vocal melodies and complimentary string arrangements which in some ways achieve the kind of haunted vibe achieved by jazz great, Billie Holiday. Another obvious comparison is American jazz-hopper Erykah Badu, although from a more commercial point of view, the label ‘The British Lauryn Hill’ seems blindingly predictable. However, it must be said that she remains much the apprentice of all three of her influences.
Easy listening with an urban edge; she may well end up carving a niche for herself within the Norah Jones/Katie Melua field, rather than existing as an ambassador for the UK urban scene. Can she live up to the hype? Probably.
