Various - The Mix 2006
Another three disc release from Hed Kandi, The Mix 2006 offers up a feast of dance music, covering three themes familiar to followers of the label.
The Disco Heaven Mix kicks off somewhat deceptively with Solu Music's sensual, Latin-tinged Fade before moving on to such huge floor fillers as Bob Sinclar's inescapable Love Generation and Chanel's infectious My Life. Still in funky house territory, but dropping the soulful vocals, are entries from Cloud 9 and She's Sunshine. Axwell's take on Hard Fi's indie favourite Hard To Beat rounds this CD off nicely.
The Twisted Disco Mix has more of an electro vibe, best demonstrated by Digitalism's bleepy Zdarlight and Tiga's remix of Tomas Andersson's Washing Up, an odd track but one that seems to have caught on. Elsewhere, Juliet's Avalon is darkened up by David Guetta and Joachim Garraud, while Sucker DJs' Lotta Lovin' shamelessly shovels on spiralling euphoria.
The (unmixed) Back To Love CD is filled with club tunes from the late 80s and early 90s. It lacks the punch of the other two and sounds dated - check the blend of diva vocals and rapping on Nomad's (I Wanna Give You) Devotion. However, the lack of cynicism is occasionally endearing and should satisfy the nostalgic.
With one CD of light, one pleasingly dark (which at last lives up to the "Twisted" name) and one sure to bring back memories (for those of a certain age), The Mix 2006 is another step up for Hed Kandi. Plenty to stomp your feet to here.
